She’s Geeky – Inspiration and Value

I (Kaliya) have been thinking a lot about what the key deliverables and differentiators of She’s Geeky events are.

Women getting inspired and the growth of vital networks are a key deliverables of our events.

Without inspiration, places to re-energize, and networks that support them, women who have done the hard work of developing their skills to work in STEM often drop out after just a few years in their respective fields. There are many approaches to improving the situation of women in STEM fields. Increasing retention rates is our focus.

She’s Geeky Twin Cities Announcement: Now Is the Time for Geeky Women and Girls to Gather

If you have ever been in a room full of geeks and you were the only female, imagine the opposite – every geek in the room is female. Wow. The energy. The excitement. The validation.

It’s all yours at the She’s Geeky unConference Friday and Saturday, September 23 and 24, 2011, in St. Paul at the Science Museum of Minnesota. The unConference is for geeky women and girls who have careers or aspiring careers in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

The She’s Geeky Agenda: Based on What You Want to Talk About

Here’s how a She’s Geeky unConference works: All participants can bring their own ideas about topics. All topics go on a board and are sorted out to shape the unConference agenda – and every woman or girl can contribute. It’s all about you and your interests. Registration will open at 8:00 AM both days. The conference will start at 9:00 AM and will wrap up around 5:30 PM with a break for lunch in between.

To learn more about last year’s St. Paul unConference check out our Book Proceedings of August 2010 St. Paul UnConference.

My first She’s Geeky unConference was in Washington, DC.  Jacque Urick and I went there not knowing what to expect. We came back with a commitment to replicate and share that amazing experience. More than 100 women and girls came to the 2010 event in St. Paul and proved that She’s Geeky has a base and a future in the Twin Cities.

We found a supportive, informative, super-smart, fun, dynamic group of women at She’s Geeky.  You’re welcome to get to know us and join us.

Updates – Twin Cities and DC

I just had a great talk with Elizabeth Tupper one of the main organizers in the Twin Cities. Over the next week we will be working with her and her team to get the site and registration up. Yeah!

Spring came and went and we didn’t host She’s Geeky in DC. One of the reasons was a timing conflict with Nonprofit 2.0. We are checking with the community to find a good time that won’t conflict with other key events.

If you are interested in She’s Geeky and encouraging us to come to your city please use this form.

She’s Geeky Bay Area 4 Hotel Recommendations

The Fabulous Stacy Banks wrote to share her hotel finds for the upcoming Bay Area Event:

If anyone is still looking for recommendations on local hotels I found that Joie de Vire hotes has two that are both good locations and good on pricing. The Hotel Tomo (I’m staying here) up in Japantown and about a mile away from the conference site within walking distance of the bus line that runs on Van Ness.
Hotel Carlton is on Nob Hill and walking distance from the Conference location.

I can’t agree with her more – JDV Hotels are fabulous and I stay at them regularly in Silicon Valley.

If others have recommendations e-mail us at info@shesgeeky.org and I will post them.
